Synopsis: For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.
But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn’t want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.
Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she’s made for herself—and realizes that the life she’s always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.
The Selection’s main character is a young, red-headed girl called America Singer. America receives a form through her door that allows her to apply to have the chance of being one of the selected thirty-five girls and to maybe become the love of Prince Maxon’s life. But America is already in love, with a neighbour who is a lower class than her, this would be frowned upon by many, especially her mother so America has been meeting up with the dark haired boy, Aspen, in the middle of the night when everybody else is sleeping.
When Aspen hears about America receiving the form, he tells her that she should apply and that she should at least give herself the chance, her family is also behind the idea, her mother and sister especially love the idea of America becoming the next queen.
With all the pressure, America signs up, thinking that she would never stand a chance anyway, so what’s the harm? When America meets up with Aspen again they have a fallout and Aspen breaks up with America, a week later she has received information that she is, in fact, one of the selected few.
America and Aspen leave on bad times, America goes to the palace to meet Prince Maxon and tries to give her family the life they’ve always dreamed of. When America meets Maxon, she never dreamed of actually liking him but soon enough a friendship starts to develop and America starts having feelings that she just can’t explain. America is not sure what to do as the feelings for Aspen never left and when she unexpectedly bumps into him in the palace hallway she is not so sure if she’s willing to let him go for the life and luxuries of being a member of the royal family.
The characters are so well built in this story, America is sweet, beautiful and innocent but with a bit of stubbornness that her family and friends admire.
I liked Aspen straight off and didn’t think there would be any possible way that I would end up liking Prince Maxon as I was rooting for Aspen, the poor handsome boy from the start.
There are other girls in the competition that have been selected that I warmed to and are adorable and sweet, then there are others that I hate and would love for America to give them a good slap.
Then there’s Prince Maxon, ah, Prince Maxon. HE IS SO DREAMY. I love him, he is beautiful and I just want him all to myself please.
I have always thought that a good book is built around strong characters and this book is filled with strong characters, I even love the maids in this book! Kiera Cass did a fantastic job with this one.
The Selection is now one of my favourite books I’ve had the pleasure to read. I don’t usually read romantic books, especially ones with royalty in, princes and princesses, kings and queens, they don’t usually do it for me and I went into The Selection ready to be disappointed, thankfully I was proven wrong and I couldn’t have been happier with it. I am so excited that this is a series as I now have something to dive right into and jump around with happiness about.
